  Day 4

Depart Taipei for a full day of included sightseeing on the way to Hualien. Your journey takes you to Taroko Gorge. This remarkable canyon is a truly breathtaking sight. The sheer walls, which are shot through with marble, plunge hundreds of feet to the rushing waters of the Liwu River. We visit the Eternal Spring Shrine, a memorial to the workers who died during the construction of the Taroko highway. Then it¡¯s on to Swallow Grotto, named after the birds that make the holes in the cliff-face their home, the impressive Tunnel of Nine Turns and more. We also visit Hualien Stone & Sculptural Park and the Ami aboriginal village, to learn something of the island¡¯s original inhabitants. Continue to your hotel in Hualien for an overnight stay.

  Day 5

After breakfast depart for a day filled with breathtaking scenery in the East Coast National Scenic Area. We visit the Pachi Observatory to enjoy some great views over Jaci beach, and the impressive Stone Steps, almost a mile of spectacular terraced rocks. You¡¯ll also see the cliff-side Caves of the Eight Immortals, used for many years as a place of worship, and the Stone Umbrella, named after the peculiar-shaped rocks that reach into the sea.

In the afternoon, take the train from Taitung to Kaohsiung. Here we take a look at Love River and visit LioHo Night Market, which is a great place to sample some local delicacies. Continue to your hotel in Kaohsiung for an overnight stay.

  Day 6

Leave Kaohsiung for the drive to Taichung. Visit the religious centre of Foguangshan, famous for its giant statue of the Buddha before reaching the huge and ornate Spring and Autumn Pavilions, dedicated to Kuan Kung, an ancient god of war. Continue to your hotel in Taichung for an overnight stay.

  Day 7

After breakfast depart the hotel and visit the wonderful Sun Moon Lake. This famous body of water, surrounded by mountain peaks and temples, is the very picture of our traditional image of China. Afterwards continue to the Puli Winery, Wenwu Temple, Tehua Village, Tse-En Pagoda and Holy Monk Shrine. Continue back to Taipei for a final overnight stay.

  Day 8

After breakfast transfer to the airport for your return flight to the UK. As you are flying westwards, arrival in the UK is later the same day.
